The Alexis Family – A Hilarious Clown Dynasty

When Tony Alexis steps into the ring with his "Ahoi!", you immediately feel: here comes someone who isn't a clown to make a living, but lives to be a clown. Born in Spain, the artist has been performing in the ring since the age of five, first with his father in Barcelona, later in major European circuses. For decades, he was one of the defining "Dummer August" (Auguste clown) at Circus Krone, at the Monte-Carlo Festival and in many other programs – always with a red nose, childlike humor and a barrel full of surprises.

Tony Alexis comes from a clown family where stumbling was elevated to an art form: his father, grandfather and brother were also clowns, making Tony the fourth generation to carry on this tradition. This later evolved into the famous Tony Alexis Trio: Tony as the Auguste, joined by his wife Jeanette and a whiteface clown partner – first Max, later the Frenchman Adrien – who together were "responsible for the loud laughs in the program." With musicality, pantomime, juggling and a very physical, warm-hearted humor, the trio became a living legend in the realm of good cheer, honored among others by the Spanish royal house.

Jeanette Alexis brings her own circus history: she comes from a German circus family with roots at Holzmüller, Bügler and Stey; her father was an animal trainer, her mother a high-wire artist. Toni and Jeanette met in 1977 in Barcelona, after her performance as a ballerina on an elephant; they married in 1981, and in 1983 Jeanette first stepped into the ring as a clown alongside her husband – spontaneously filling in, but so convincingly that she permanently became "Mrs. Clown." Since then, the couple has been spreading good cheer worldwide as a "double Auguste" and are among the absolute audience favorites at Circus Krone.

The family's clown tradition continues in the fifth generation: the sons Totti and Tonito have also become clowns and frequently perform as whiteface clowns alongside their parents. Totti Alexis, born in 1982 during his parents' engagement at Cirque Pinder-Jean Richard, has been in the ring since childhood and is considered a versatile whiteface clown with a strong musical and instrumental repertoire. Tonito, born in 1992 in Düren, describes himself as a "child of a five-generation clown family" and carries on the tradition with engagements in German, Spanish and international circuses.

For the Circus & Clown Museum Vienna, the visit from Tony and Jeanette Alexis is therefore much more than a nice meeting: when they stand in front of their own display case with Pinder cover page, costumes and props, it becomes clear how alive circus history is as long as its protagonists can still tell their own stories and laugh. The fact that Tony Alexis was honored at the 48th International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo for his approximately 65-year stage anniversary makes this story all the more current – and his smile at the museum builds a direct bridge between our collection pieces and the present day of clown artistry.
